20th century symphony orchestraAlso Sprach Zarathustra / R. Strauss

Orchestras became moderate-sized and since the early 20th century (with 100 players) composers have reduced orchestras to 75 - 90 players.

The brass and woodwind sections normally have only one player per part.

New percussion instruments have been devised and changes made in the playing and use of old ones.

In the second half of the century composers showed a renewed interest in writing for small orchestras (chamber, brass and string ensembles).
