Luther by Lucas Cranach the elder, Glaeria Uffizi, Florence

Luther, Martin

The priest who criticized the pope, and was heavily excommunicated by the Roman Catholic Church. He decided to wave the authority of the church in Rome and this brought about the creation of the (Lutheran) Protestant Church. He was not a great composer, but he holds great musical significance, due to the fact that composers began gaining their freedom and economic independence from the church - thanks to him. The change in musical practice that would follow was tremendous.
